Mortgage broker mom balancing family life and a successful mortgage business

How to Run Your Mortgage Business While Raising Kids

March 27, 2026•10 min read

You can be a committed mom and a successful broker. You just need a system that makes it possible.

There’s a moment I remember so clearly. One hand on my phone trying to respond to a client. The other packing school lunches while reminding my kids where their shoes are, and mentally running through the day’s appointments.

It was one of those mornings where everything felt urgent. And for some reason, none of it felt fully doable.

If you’re a mom and a mortgage broker, you probably know that feeling well.

You’re building a business. You’re raising kiddos. And somehow you’re expected to do both with calm, clarity and a smile.

The Reality of Running a Mortgage Business While Raising Kids

Running a mortgage brokerage while raising kids isn’t just about time management. It's a mental load. It’s remembering who needs what, when. It’s switching from client calls to school drop offs without a pause. It’s carrying the weight of responsibility on both sides work and home all day long.

And then there’s the guilt. Guilt of being available for clients but distracted at home. Guilt of focusing on family while work piles up. Guilt of wondering if you’re doing enough in either role.

Just like many moms imagine maternity leave will be bliss only to discover it’s also exhausting and overwhelming, many mom brokers enter business ownership thinking flexibility will solve everything.

Instead, they find themselves stretched thin, chasing balance that feels just out of reach. And increasingly feeling more #momguilt than #momboss.

Redefining Success as a Mortgage Broker and a Mom

As a mom of three and mortgage agent for that past 16 years, here’s the shift that changed everything for me:

Success doesn’t mean doing it all perfectly. It means finding ways to build a life and business that can support each other.

That requires letting go of the idea that you have to do everything yourself.

It means accepting that:

·Some days will feel messy but that’s okay
·Progress doesn’t always look productive
·Support isn’t a weakness, it’s a strategy

And most importantly, it means redefining success in a way that works for this season of life.

Why Systems and Support Matter More Than Hustle

When everything depends on you remembering, managing, and pushing, burnout isn’t a possibility it’s inevitable.

What changes everything is structure.

Systems that reduce decision fatigue. Routines that give your day's rhythm. Support that helps you stay focused without feeling overwhelmed.

When your business has support built into it, you stop operating in survival mode. You stop feeling like one missed day will derail everything. And you finally have room to breathe.

That’s when growth starts to feel steady instead of stressful.

How to Start Taking Back Control Before Summer Hits

With summer coming, this is the perfect time to start getting ahead of the chaos instead of reacting to it.

And the first place I always start with my one on one mortgage clients is simple… but powerful:

A brain dump.

I know it sounds basic. But this is one of the biggest shifts you can make.

And it’s something I use all the time even inside my group mentoring calls.

Most of my group Zooms actually start with this. We take the first 5 minutes of the call and everyone writes out everything that’s on their mind. All the follow ups, files, things they need to deal with after the call.

Then we get into the wins.

Because our brains are wired to keep us safe… not to celebrate progress. We don’t focus enough on what’s working, we go straight to what’s next.

So we take a minute and go through the wins no matter how big or small and remind our brains: thank you for keeping us safe, I appreciate it… but we’ve got goals to smash.

Okay, a bit off topic for this blog… but it’s so good I had to share.

Because if we don’t get it out first… it’s sitting there in the background the whole time.

And I want my clients focused on what we’re working on during that call not mentally juggling everything else they need to do after.

It’s such a small thing, but it makes a huge difference in how present and productive those calls are.

Right now, most of what’s overwhelming you isn’t just your workload… it’s everything sitting in your head.

Files.
Follow ups.
Kids schedules.
Appointments.
Groceries.
Life.

It’s all just… sitting there.

So the first step is to get it out.

You can do this on paper, in a Google doc, or what I personally use and love the Reminders app on my iPhone.

I literally just open a new list and start typing (or talking into it) everything that’s on my mind.

And I mean everything.

The first time I did this, I did it with my husband.
I had over 100 things on my list… I think he had like 4.

(Which honestly says everything we need to know without me saying anything at all.)

Client files (I usually just use last names I don’t go into detail because I know what I need to do on each file)
Things for the kids (summer camps, sports, school stuff)
Appointments
To do lists
Random things I don’t want to forget

Get it all out.

Because from this point on… we don’t do overwhelmed anymore.
Overwhelm is just a sign there’s no system behind what you’re doing.
And that’s something you can change.

(Say that out loud a few times seriously.)

Step 2: Organize It So Your Brain Can Breathe

Once everything is out, now we organize it.

This is why I love using the Reminders app you can create categories and drag and drop things into them.

For example, I have:

• A category for each of my kids

• A category for groceries

• A category for my files

• A category for appointments

And then I break it down even further.

Groceries? I separate by store Costco, No Frills, Farm Boy, Food Basics, and Independent.

And each store has exactly what we need.

It’s also shared with my husband because he does the grocery shopping (which has been a game changer… more on delegating later 😉).

Listen… I cannot do the online grocery ordering or pickup. I feel like they always give me the worst produce 😂
What is your hack for this? Don’t gate keep I’m clearly not gate keeping over here.

So instead of him texting me while I’m in the middle of a file asking “what do we need?”… it’s already there.

No interruptions. No switching back and forth.

Step 3: Pick One Day for Appointments

This one is simple but will save you so much time and mental energy.

Pick one day a week for appointments.

For me, it’s Fridays.

Dentist.
Chiro.
RMT.

(Okay… I might have lied a little on that one 😅 I have a bigger office space than I need these days, so I rent out a few offices. One is to an RMT & Craniosacral Therapist… and yesterday (a Monday) at 12:50pm she asked if I wanted a treatment. Obviously I said yes.)

But if the dentist across the street calls? I’m sticking to my Friday rule.

Kids appointments.
Everything goes on that day.

It doesn’t mean you’ll have appointments every Friday, but when something comes up… you already know where it goes.

This keeps you from constantly running in and out of the office during the week and breaking your focus.

Step 4: Start Delegating (Yes, Even to Your Kids)

This is the part most of us struggle with.

Because we’re used to doing everything ourselves.

But when you do your brain dump and start organizing it… you’ll quickly see how much you don’t actually need to be the one doing.

When I started doing this, my son (he was 9 at the time) started doing the laundry.

Every morning he goes around, collects it, takes it downstairs, sorts it, and starts a load.

At first? Total nightmare.

Now? It’s just what he does.

My daughter organizes shoes at the front and back door that’s her job.

She also reads to her younger brother.

My kids love smoothies, and I swear I was making 10 a day… so now my 10 year old is the smoothie maker… and my 3 year old is the smoothie assistant… and my daughter just stands there asking how much longer until the smoothie is done 😂

Done.

The point is our kids are capable.

And not only does this help you, it helps them.

Your Phone Can Be Your Assistant

You don’t need more hours in the day.

You need a system that supports you.

Your phone whether it’s your iPhone, Apple Watch, or whatever you use can become your assistant.

Holding everything.
Organizing everything.
So your brain doesn’t have to.

And once you do this once, the next time is faster.

You can do a quick brain dump daily, weekly, whatever works for you.

But the goal is simple:

Get it out of your head… and into a system.
Every. Single. Thing. Out.

FAQ

Can I grow my mortgage business without working evenings and weekends?

Yes but not by doing more. Most mortgage broker moms aren’t struggling because they aren’t working hard enough… it’s because there’s no structure behind what they’re doing. With the right systems and support, you can create consistent business growth during work hours so your evenings can actually be yours again.

What is the best way for mortgage brokers to stay consistent with marketing?

Consistency comes from having a plan not relying on motivation. Trying to “figure out what to post” every day is what keeps most brokers stuck. When you have structured content, simple systems, and support behind you, showing up online becomes something that fits into your day instead of taking it over.

Is coaching or mentorship worth it for mortgage brokers?

For most brokers, this is the turning point. Having someone in your corner who understands both the mortgage business and the reality of balancing family life can change everything. It gives you clarity, direction, and support so you’re not trying to build your business alone.

How do I balance being a mom and running a successful mortgage business?

It starts by removing the idea that you have to choose between the two. With the right systems, boundaries, and support, your business can be built in a way that works with your life — not against it. You don’t need more hours in the day, you need a better way of using the ones you already have.

Can Canadian mortgage brokers grow their business with social media and email marketing?

Yes and many are already doing it successfully. In Canada, mortgage brokers who consistently show up on social media and stay connected through email are building stronger client relationships and generating more repeat and referral business.
